PJF Farm & Lodge

PJF Farm and Lodge is a remarkable site where three of Louisiana's six ecoregions converge. Framed by Bayou Chicot and Bayou Cocodrie, five distinct habitat types and 1,600 acres of rice/crawfish aquaculture are found here. 

The diversity of habitats (cypress-tupelo swamp, mixed pine-hardwood forest, hardwood slope forest, bottomland hardwood forest, mixed grasslands, plus rice/crawfish aquaculture) equate to outstanding year-round birding. Expect to view all manner of birdlife, from waterfowl, shorebirds, and wading birds to gulls, terns, raptors, and songbirds. 

A mixed species waterbird rookery is located here, hosting nesting ducks, egrets, herons, cormorants, and Roseate Spoonbills from February through May. Depending on the season, other waterbirds that appear here include gallinules and rails and numerous additional species of waterfowl, wading birds, and shorebirds. 

Nesting woodland songbirds flock here, including flycatchers, vireos, warblers, cardinals, and buntings. Numerous nearctic woodland species inhabit the forests here each fall/winter/spring, including many sparrow species, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Phoebe, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, and Orange-crowned and Yellow-rumped Warblers. 

Amenities include restrooms, parking, lodge and rental cabins, and nature trails. Access is by appointment or annual membership. The site is not handicapped-accessible. This site focuses on additional outdoor recreational opportunities, including birding, hiking, paddling, horseback riding, nature programs, and photography.
