The open waters of the Calcasieu River dominate the birding scene of this 210-acre park. Already, about 136 species have been sighted at this relatively new development, including several rarities, including Bald Eagle and Sandhill Crane.
Set up a spotting scope or a tripod on any piers or the observation deck to check for waterfowl, wading birds, and other waterbirds. Black-bellied Whistling Duck and Wood Duck nest here. Other waterbirds of interest include Double-crested and Neotropic Cormorants, Anhinga, American White Pelican, Laughing and Ring-billed Gulls, Black and Forster's Terns, Osprey, Bald Eagle, and Belted Kingfisher. A rotating cast of swallow species hunts over the river year-round.
The park also features cypress swamps, bottomland hardwood forests, and freshwater marsh habitats. Check the marshy areas for King Rail, Common Gallinule, Black-necked Stilt, Wilson's Snipe, and other shorebirds. Bottomland hardwood and cypress swamp areas typically yield a variety of woodpecker species, along with Great-crested Flycatcher, American Goldfinch, Hermit Thrush, and any of a dozen or so warbler species that have been recorded here.
Aside from birding, recreational opportunities include fishing, paddling, picnicking, and nature photography. Amenities include paved parking, a visitors center, an amphitheater, a boat launch, a picnic area, a pavilion, fishing areas, several piers, restrooms/water, and a hard-surfaced walking path along the river, ending at an observation deck. The site is handicapped-accessible.
