Lake Charles - Millennium Park & Marina along Lake Charles Boardwalk

It’s not often that birders have the opportunity to engage in their hobby in the middle of a city. But birders visiting downtown Lake Charles can wander over to Millennium Park & Marina to spot various species.

The view of the lake from the lakeside boardwalk and walking path offers the opportunity to observe numerous seabirds, wading birds, and other waterbird species. Nine species of waterfowl, plus Horned Grebe and Common Loon, have been recorded here. Seabird action is especially good in fall and winter. Visitors will likely see Bonaparte’s, Laughing, Franklin’s, Ring-billed, Herring Gulls, Caspian, Forster’s, and Royal Terns.

Bald cypress and live oak trees dot the park, providing habitat for various woodland edge species. Five woodpecker species, Eastern Kingbird, and Great-crested Flycatcher hang around the trees. Both Boat-tailed and Great-tailed Grackles visit here. During winter, Orange-crowned, Pine, and Yellow-rumped Warblers are common visitors.

The park itself is kid-oriented, with a fenced playground and splash park. Other facilities include restrooms, picnic areas, a marina, and a walking/jogging/birding trail along the lake. Additional outdoor activities at this handicapped-accessible site include boating, kayaking, and photography.
