Bogue Chitto State Park

Bogue Chitto is one of Louisiana's youngest state parks and one of the most diverse in terms of habitat types. The park's ample trail system traverses mixed pine/hardwoods, bottomland hardwoods, cypress swamps, several ponds, and sandy riparian forest. Streams meander through the park, and a utility line right-of-way provides open grassland habitat. The diversity of natural features has resulted in over 170 bird species being recorded in less than 15 years of birding. 

This is one of Louisiana's few remaining public sites where groups of game-birds such as Northern Bobwhite and Wild Turkey are recorded year-round. With so many habitat options, the long breeding species list includes Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Chimney Swift, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Anhinga, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Swallow-tailed and Mississippi Kites, Red-shouldered, Broad-winged, and Red-tailed Hawks, along with a plethora of woodland songbirds. 

This site has seven miles of nature trails and 14 miles of mountain biking/equestrian trails. Camping options range from primitive to glamping to RV, cabins, and a lodge. Besides camping, hiking/biking, horseback riding, and birding, outdoor recreational opportunities include fishing (14 fishing lakes on-site, plus the Bogue Chitto River), boating/paddling, swimming, and picnicking. Additional amenities include drinking fountains, restrooms, a pavilion, a conference center, and a water playground.
